Anatomy of No Scalpel Vasectomy
A no scalpel vasectomy is a dependable form of contraception for men who do not want to cause future pregnancy. Sperm are made in the testes and, following maturity, swim through long curly ducts called the epididymides and into the a 30 cm tube called the vasa deferentia prior to entering the urethra, which is the channel in which men urinate and ejaculate from. A vasectomy aims to divide the Vasa deferentia closer to the testes to prevent sperm from entering the semen. About 95% of semen is made from supporting structures (the prostate, bulbourethral gland and seminal vesicles) which are located closer to the urethra. Thus you will still be able to ejaculate.
No Scalpel Vasectomy in a bit more detail
No scalpel vasectomy is an office procedure that can be completed with local anaesthetic. Either a needle or Madajet Needle-free injector will be used to numb the skin and the tubes (vasa deferentia). Following sterile preparation, a single, small incision in the front of the scrotum to gain access to the vas tubes is made. Both vas tubes are divided individually and will be cauterised. Either sutures or clips will be applied to ensure that both ends of the tubes do not reconnect. This form of cauterising and fascial interposition has been shown to be the most effective for preventing recanalisation or failure. A gauze pad is applied underneath a pair of tight underwear or jock straps.
Madajet Needle-Free Injector – The No Needle No Scalpel Vasectomy
If you are anxious about needles, then you have the option of having a vasectomy with the Madajet Needle-Free injection. This anaesthetises the skin and the underlying vas deferens with a spray of local anaesthetic. It has proven to be a safe, effective and well-tolerated form of anaesthetic. This may cost extra to have, but please discuss this with Dr Ranaweera on your initial appointment.
